You've made it through rounds of conversations, preference night, and the agonizing wait. Now it's time for Bid Day. But what actually happens when you open that envelope?

Bid Day is the final, most emotional day of formal recruitment. It's when you receive your official invitation to membership and run home to your new sisters. The energy is electric, but the process is more structured than it looks on social media.

Quick Quiz

How long does the new member period typically last after Bid Day?

Select one answer.

The morning of bid day

You'll gather with other potential new members at a designated location on campus. Your recruitment counselors (Rho Gammas or Gamma Chis) will guide you through the final moments. You'll receive a sealed envelope containing your bid card.

Open it together. The room erupts. You'll learn which sorority has invited you to join.

Running home

Once you know your new chapter, you'll "run home" to your sorority house or designated meeting spot. Sisters will be waiting with signs, matching shirts, and open arms. Expect a themed celebration with food, music, and hundreds of photos.

This is the moment you've worked toward. Let yourself feel it.

What happens after the celebration

Within 24 hours, you'll be added to chapter group chats and receive your new member schedule. You'll meet your New Member Educator, who will guide you through onboarding. Expect bonding events, new member meetings, and a calendar of required activities.

Your new member period typically lasts 6 to 10 weeks, depending on your sorority's national policies. During this time, you'll learn chapter history, traditions, and expectations before initiation.

What to bring on bid day

  • Your phone (for photos and group chat invites)
  • Comfortable shoes (you'll be on your feet)
  • A small bag for gifts and bid day items
  • Water and a snack (it's a long day)
  • Your MRABA form if required by your campus

Common questions about bid day

Do I have to accept my bid? Yes, you signed a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA). Accepting your bid is binding for the academic year.

What if I'm unsure about my chapter? It's normal to feel nervous. Give yourself at least a week to settle in. If concerns persist, talk to your New Member Educator or campus Greek Life office.

Can I receive gifts on bid day? Yes! Many parents send bid day gifts. Since you won't know your chapter until that morning, pre-order from local boutiques or wait until after.

Your first week as a new member

The week after Bid Day is about logistics and bonding. You'll attend new member meetings, learn chapter history, and start building relationships. Expect a new member ceremony within the first few days.

Your chapter will provide a clear schedule of expectations. Show up, be present, and ask questions.
